Over twelve months, transport (+7.9%) leads the increases, followed by education (+5.8%), restaurants and accommodation (+5.6%) and health (+5.1%). Food, the heaviest division in the basket (22.2%), is up 4.3%. Only two divisions are down: clothing and footwear and insurance and financial services.
Inflation in Chile year by year
To put 2026 in context: December-to-December inflation was 12.8% in 2022 (press, January 2023) and fell to 3.9% in 2023 (Pauta, January 2024), 4.5% in 2024 and 3.5% in 2025. The 4.0% accumulated through September already exceeds the whole of 2025.
Inflation also explains part of what happened to pensions: the rise in interest rates that came with it hit fixed-income funds, as shown in our analysis of AFP pension fund returns in 2026.

At its October 27 meeting, the Board kept the monetary policy rate at 4.5% and warned that inflation projections for the coming months had risen above the IPoM scenario.
According to Chócale on October 13, economists polled in the Central Bank's October Economic Expectations Survey expect inflation of 4.6% for December 2026, 3.4% by September 2027 and 3.0% by September 2028, and see the policy rate holding at 4.5% at the next two meetings.

How inflation affects your wallet
- UF and mortgages: the UF is indexed to CPI, so high inflation makes mortgage payments and rents set in UF more expensive. On September 30 the UF was worth CLP 41,057.20.
- Wages and pensions: many contracts and public-sector pay adjustments use CPI as a reference.
- Savings: a peso time deposit that yields less than CPI loses purchasing power.
- Rates: with inflation above target, the Central Bank has less room to cut its policy rate, which feeds through to the loan rates charged by Chile's largest banks.

The exchange rate also moved: the dollar rose 4.44% against the peso in September alone, according to the same regulator, which also changes the dollar value of Chile's largest fortunes, as seen in the 2026 Forbes list.
