The dollar in Chile today, November 4, 2026, stands at CLP 980.59 (the Central Bank's observed rate). That is CLP 1.23 less than yesterday (CLP 981.82) and CLP 12 less than on Monday (CLP 992.66), but it remains near the year's ceiling: in 2026 the dollar is up 7.62% from the CLP 911.18 at which it closed 2025, and on October 27 it set the year's high, CLP 994.29.
The 2026 move is almost a mirror image of 2025. Last year the Chilean peso strengthened and the dollar fell 8.56%; this year it bottomed out in February, at CLP 854.25 on February 10, and has since risen 14.79%, pushed in October by falling copper, rising oil and tension in the Middle East.

What the observed dollar rate is
When people talk about the value of the dollar in Chile, the official benchmark is the dólar observado (observed dollar rate): the exchange rate the Central Bank calculates and publishes based on dollar purchases and sales by banks and other formal foreign-exchange market participants on the previous business day. That is why each day's observed rate reflects what happened in the market the day before.
It differs from the price you see at an exchange house or a bank when buying dollars for a trip, which includes each institution's margin and is usually higher for buyers. The observed rate is used in contracts, foreign-currency invoices, tax returns and company accounting.
The dollar today: how much it has risen in 2026
The dollar had two clear phases in 2026. In January and February it kept falling, as at the end of 2025: February's average was CLP 862.02, the lowest of the two years. From March it began to climb: the monthly average moved to CLP 909.89 in March, stayed close to CLP 900 through June and then rose to CLP 947.27 in September and CLP 982.28 in October, the highest monthly average since January 2025.

What drives the dollar in Chile
The exchange rate responds to many forces at once, but four weigh most in Chile. October 2026 offers good examples:
- The price of copper. It is Chile's main export: when copper falls, fewer dollars flow in and the peso weakens. On October 22, when the dollar rose CLP 8.7 to about CLP 987, copper had dropped to US$6.39 a pound, according to Emol.
- Oil and global risk. Chile imports almost all its fuel, and in times of fear investors buy dollars. That same day Brent crude topped US$111 a barrel, a five-month high, on tensions in the Persian Gulf; Capitaria analysts quoted by Emol pointed to falling copper, a sharp rise in oil and greater risk aversion.
- Regional currencies. On October 26, after Lula da Silva won Brazil's runoff, the real fell as much as 12% at the open and the dollar in Chile touched CLP 999 intraday, its highest in more than a year, according to La Tercera.
- Interest rates. If the Central Bank of Chile's rate falls relative to the US rate, investing in pesos yields relatively less. On October 27 the board kept the Monetary Policy Rate at 4.5%, as the market expected (Rankia; see the monetary policy meeting statements).
- Jan 14, 2025CLP 1,012.762025 high of the observed dollar rate.
- Dec 30, 2025Ends 2025 at CLP 911.18The peso gained 8.56% over the year.

The most expensive months in the period were January 2025 (average CLP 1,000.76) and October 2026 (CLP 982.28); the cheapest, February 2026 (CLP 862.02) and January 2026 (CLP 883.97). The gap between the highest and lowest averages is CLP 138.74, about 16%.

The dollar in perspective
Over a longer horizon, the dollar in Chile is clearly more expensive than a decade ago. On the first business day of 2015 it cost CLP 606.75 and in 2020, CLP 748.74; today it costs CLP 980.59, 62% more than in 2015. The jump between 2020 and 2025 coincided with the pandemic, local political uncertainty and the US rate cycle.
For households, a pricier dollar shows up in imports: fuel, technology, cars and travel. It also makes dollar debts more expensive and raises exporters' peso income. Amounts indexed to inflation, such as those in UF or UTM, feel the effect of a strong dollar with a lag, through the CPI.
The dollar and the stock market: how they relate
The dollar and the Santiago Stock Exchange tend to move in opposite directions during bouts of global fear. In October 2026, while the dollar climbed toward CLP 1,000, the IPSA fell 6.5% for the month, its worst month since October 2023, according to the Santiago Stock Exchange. For a foreign investor the loss was larger, 8.2% in dollar terms, because the peso weakened at the same time.
