UF value today: what Chile's Unidad de Fomento is, how it is calculated and how much it has risen

The UF value today, November 4, 2026, is CLP 41,268.88, according to the daily series of the Central Bank of Chile. So far this year the Unidad de Fomento is up 3.87% (it started 2026 at CLP 39,731.79) and over twelve months it has gained 4.17%. On November 9 it will reach CLP 41,295.46, the last value calculated with September's CPI.

The UF is Chile's most widely used unit of account: mortgages, rents, private health plans (isapres), insurance, inflation-linked deposits and most long-term contracts are set in UF. Knowing how it is calculated tells you how much your mortgage payment or rent will rise next month, before the bill arrives.

What the UF is

The Unidad de Fomento (UF) is, in the Central Bank's words, an indexation unit authorized by the bank for peso-denominated lending by banks and savings and credit cooperatives. In practice it is a unit of account that is never printed: an amount in UF is converted into pesos on the day it is paid, at that day's value.

Its point is to preserve purchasing power against inflation. If a rent is 15 UF, the landlord receives each month an amount of pesos that grows at the same pace as the CPI; if it were a fixed CLP 600,000, inflation would erode its real value. That is why the UF dominates long contracts and rarely shows up in everyday purchases, which remain in pesos.

It was born in 1967, when the Ministry of Finance created it for savings and housing credit; it was then worth 100 escudos. Today the Central Bank calculates and publishes it under Chapter II.B.3 of its Compendium of Financial Regulations, using the power granted by its Constitutional Organic Law (articles 3 and 35 No. 9).

How the UF value is calculated

The rule is simple and is set out in the Central Bank's official methodology: the UF is adjusted daily from the 10th of each month to the 9th of the following month, and over that period it rises (or falls) by exactly the change in the CPI of the previous calendar month, which the INE (Chile's statistics agency) reports by the 8th at the latest.

  • Step 1. The INE publishes the previous month's CPI (for example, September 2026 CPI came out on October 8: 0.4%).
  • Step 2. The Central Bank calculates a daily factor that spreads that change in equal geometric steps across the days from the 10th of that month to the 9th of the next.
  • Step 3. Each day, the last published UF value is multiplied by the accumulated factor and rounded to two decimals.
  • Step 4. Each day's value for the period is published in the Diario Oficial (official gazette) by the 9th of each month.

As a formula: daily factor = (1 + CPI/100)^(1/D), where D is the number of days between the 10th of the current month and the 9th of the next. The UF on day d of the period equals the UF of the 9th multiplied by (1 + CPI/100)^(d/D). Published values are never revised: if the INE corrects a CPI figure, the UF already published stays as it is.

With real data from this cycle: the UF on October 9, 2026 was CLP 41,130.94 and on November 9 it will be CLP 41,295.46. The difference is exactly 0.40%, September's CPI. That is why the UF is known a month in advance: the value for any day up to December 9 will be known on November 8, when the INE publishes October's CPI.

A detail that confuses many people: the UF can also fall. It happens when the previous month's CPI is negative, as in June 2025 (-0.4%). In that case the daily factor is below 1 and the UF drops a few pesos between July 10 and August 9. If CPI is zero, the UF stays frozen for the whole cycle.

How much the UF has risen: the UF value since 2024

Over the past three years the UF has risen at a pace of 3% to 5% a year, in line with inflation. In 2024 it gained 4.40% (from CLP 36,797.64 to CLP 38,416.69 between January 1 and December 31) and in 2025, 3.41% (from CLP 38,419.17 to CLP 39,727.96). In 2026 it is up 3.87% through November 4, with a steeper stretch between May and June, when March (1.0%) and April (1.3%) CPI figures from the INE kicked in.

The chart shows the UF's typical shape: an almost continuous staircase, with flat months when CPI was zero (such as April 2026, which reflected February's 0.0% reported by the INE) and small dips when inflation was negative. For anyone paying a mortgage in UF, every step is a direct increase in pesos.

History of the UF value since 1990

Looking further back, the UF on January 1, 1990 was worth CLP 5,435.28; today it is CLP 41,268.88, or 7.6 times more. The biggest jump came in the 1990s, when Chilean inflation was still in double digits: between 1990 and 1995 the UF more than doubled (+112%). Since 2000 the rise has been slower, with one exception: 2022, when the UF climbed 13.31% in a single year because of high post-pandemic inflation.

What the UF is used for in Chile

The UF appears in almost every contract that lasts more than a year. The most common uses are:

  • Mortgages: home prices and the monthly payment are set in UF, so the peso payment rises every month with inflation.
  • Rents: many leases, especially for offices and shops, are agreed in UF.
  • Isapres and insurance: private health plans and life and car insurance premiums are usually in UF.
  • Savings and investments: inflation-linked time deposits, Central Bank and Treasury bonds in UF, and housing savings accounts.
  • Pensions: annuities are expressed in UF to keep their real value.
  • Public contracts and fines: some government contracts and charges are set in UF (others, such as traffic fines, use the UTM, a different unit).

How to convert UF to pesos

The conversion is a multiplication: amount in UF × UF value of the day = amount in pesos. With the UF of November 4, 2026 (CLP 41,268.88):

Amount in UFEquals (Nov 4, 2026)Example
1 UFCLP 41,269Reference value
5 UFCLP 206,344High-end isapre plan
15 UFCLP 619,033Monthly rent or mortgage payment
100 UFCLP 4,126,888Small down payment
1,000 UFCLP 41,268,880Housing savings
3,000 UFCLP 123,806,640Apartment in Santiago

To go the other way, from pesos to UF, divide: a CLP 10,000,000 deposit is worth 242.32 UF today. Note that the result changes every day, so contracts always use the UF of the payment date.

The UF is not the only benchmark that hits your wallet. The observed dollar rate affects the price of imports and fuel, and the IPSA shows how the largest companies on the Santiago Stock Exchange are doing.
