How to invest one million Chilean pesos in 2026: options and what each returned

Updated November 6, 2026. With CLP 1,000,000 there are at least six common routes in Chile: an interest-bearing demand account, a savings account, a term deposit, mutual funds, APV and stocks or ETFs. The difference between them is not only what they return but how far they can fall and when the money can be withdrawn. A one-year deposit paid an average of 4.53% a year in September, according to the Central Bank: about CLP 45,300 in interest. Equity funds of large Chilean companies returned 26.72% in the twelve months to September, according to the Mutual Funds Association, but lost 9.83% in 2022.

This guide does not recommend what to invest in: it puts side by side what each option paid or returned with official, dated data, and explains which time horizon and tolerance for losses each one suits. Inflation is the minimum bar: CPI rose 4.5% in the twelve months to October 2026, according to INE. Past performance does not guarantee future returns.

How to invest one million pesos in 2026: what each option returned

The table shows what CLP 1,000,000 would have become in twelve months in each option, using each source's latest official figure. Periods are not identical (September or October 2026, depending on the source) and amounts are gross, before taxes and, for accounts, before fees. They are for comparing orders of magnitude, not for forecasting.

Options without risk to capital: term deposits, savings and demand accounts

The three traditional bank options do not lose nominal pesos and have state backing. According to the CMF, demand and checking account balances have 100% coverage if a bank goes into liquidation, and individuals' term deposits and savings accounts have a state guarantee of up to UF 200 per institution and UF 400 across the system per year: one million pesos is far below that cap, which is about CLP 8,255,902. Their limit is inflation: with CPI at 4.5%, a deposit at 4.53% barely breaks even in purchasing power.

How much an amount grows over time depends on reinvesting interest; we explain it with peso examples in our compound interest guide.

Mutual funds and APV with one million pesos

One million is enough to enter most mutual funds. The industry had 4,021,201 investors in September 2026, according to the AFM, and its categories range from short-term debt (4.22% over 12 months) to equities (26.72% for large Chilean companies). The cost that weighs most is the annual management fee, which can be compared on the CMF's mutual fund portal; with returns of 4% to 6%, a gap of a few tenths eats part of the gain.

APV (voluntary pension savings) changes the math for those saving for retirement. Under regime A, the state adds a 15% bonus: on CLP 1,000,000 that is CLP 150,000, under the annual cap of 6 UTM (about CLP 434,640 at November's UTM), according to the Pensions Superintendency. That bonus goes into the APV account and is returned if the money is withdrawn before retirement. Under regime B, the benefit is a tax reduction that depends on the bracket. We compare both with the SII table in our guide to APV regime A or B.

Stocks and ETFs: what happened to the IPSA and the S&P 500

Stocks are the option with the most potential and the most variation. The IPSA closed October 2026 at 10,254.15 points: 8.75% above a year earlier, but -2.17% year to date and 10.2% below its January close, according to the Santiago Stock Exchange. Someone who invested CLP 1,000,000 in January would be at a loss today; someone who did so in October 2025, at a gain. The month-by-month path is in our IPSA guide.

To invest outside Chile, the most common route is an ETF tracking an index such as the S&P 500, which is up 10.6% in dollars in 2026 as of November 3 and about 19% in pesos because of the dollar's rise, using FRED data. With one million, fixed costs matter: CLP 1,000,000 is about US$1,030 at the November 5 observed dollar, and a minimum fee of US$15 per trade, like the one in Renta 4's 2026 fee schedule for North American markets, equals 1.46% of the purchase (Pauta Financiera calculation). Our S&P 500 guide covers the taxes and costs of investing from Chile.

Before investing one million pesos: four questions

  • When will I need it? Money for use within months fits demand accounts, deposits or short-term debt funds; money for several years can better tolerate stock declines.
  • Do I have expensive debt? Consumer loans averaged 14.53% a year in September 2026, more than any risk-free option in the table; we explain it in how to compare rates and CAE.
  • How far could it fall without me selling? In 2022 equity funds lost 9.83% and the S&P 500, 19.4%. If a fall like that would force a sale, the horizon or the option does not fit.
  • What does it charge? Brokerage fees, fund management fees and account fees take a larger share of the gain when the amount is small.

Those who choose to pick stocks directly need a broker registered with the CMF; the step-by-step is in our guide to investing on the Santiago Stock Exchange.
